Learning

At our school, we teach the NSW curriculum and offer many different subjects to support each student’s learning. We know that development of skills in literacy and numeracy are the building blocks for learning and for everyday life. Our teachers use effective teaching strategies to help students achieve their goals.

Religion and ethics

NSW public schools offer special religious education and special education in ethics, delivered by approved providers wherever available.

When enrolling your child, you’ll be able to choose an option from the approved providers offered at our school. Students not attending SRE or SEE are given supervised alternative meaningful activities.

You’re welcome to change your choice at any time. Just let us know in writing or use the online form (if available at our school).

For more information, visit the department’s website or contact us.

At Laurieton Public School, SRE and SEE is delivered on Friday from 9.20 – 9.50am for Years 3-6 students and from 10.00 – 10.30am for K-2  students.

The following classes are offered at Laurieton Public School:

Special Religious Education (SRE): Combined Christian SRE

SRE provides the opportunity your child needs to think through some of life’s big questions.

It gives them a unique and safe space to explore spiritual and life issues. SRE equips them with a bigger range of tools to develop their ethical and moral framework.

SRE engages students using reading, singing, drama, group activities and conversations as they question life, explore values, and discover faith.

SRE is provided by trained locals who volunteer from different Christian denominations using Department of Education authorised curriculum.

The approved provider in this combined arrangement is the Anglican Diocese of Newcastle.

The curriculum is based on the Good News about Jesus and learning the key elements of Christian life and culture. It can be found at  Connect  (Kinder & Y6) and  Godspace  (Yrs1 – 5).

If you have any questions, you can find out more about Christian SRE from  http://www.whysre.com.au  or contact Travis, the local Christian SRE coordinator for more information at Camden Haven Anglican Church on (02) 6559 5036.

Special Education in Ethics (SEE)

SEE classes support children to develop a life-long capacity for making well-reasoned decisions about ethical issues. Through balanced argument students learn to disagree respectfully, to challenge ideas and to support their arguments with considered evidence. Our volunteer SEE teachers use lesson materials which present a range of stories, scenarios and questions to generate discussion. SEE teachers are trained to impartially facilitate student discussions, helping students develop their critical thinking and collaborative inquiry skills. SEE teachers support student learning by:

  • showing genuine curiosity and interest in the questions being discussed
  • staying neutral
  • creating space for students to think, share ideas and give reasons.

SEE is provided by Primary Ethics. You can find out more information about the program from the  Primary Ethics  Website and SEE coordinator, Ros Hodge, who can be contacted via the school.

We notice these students early. They may learn quickly or show strong skills in creativity, leadership, problem solving or sport. We help them stay challenged with lessons and activities that match their strengths.
